Issuance of New Passports for Expired Passports:

A Sri Lankan citizen by descent or by registration can apply for a Sri Lankan Passport. Ordinary passports are valid for 10 years at the time of first issue. On the expiry of 10 years from the date of issuance, or if there are no pages for visa endorsement, a new passport should be obtained.

New Passports are issued only by the Controller /Immigration & Emigration, Colombo and the process usually takes about 8 – 12 weeks from the date of application. However, the applicants are advised to submit their applications at least about 6 months before the expiry of the current passport.

Documents Required:

Duly completed Form K35 application - ( Application for Sri Lankan Passport (Form K 35)

please use English Block Capital. Please ensure that the signatures are confined to the cages provided immediately below the photographs. Section 21 of the application will be completed by the Consulate General.

03 colour photographs of size 3.5 cm * 4.5 cm (background should be light color except white)

Your photos must: be a close-up of your full head and upper shoulders, both ears and the forehead clearly visible and free from spectacles and head covers.

Photos taken with in a three months prior to the application is necessary as per the Department of Immigration and Emigration guidelines.

Current Sri Lankan passport and one photocopy of the data page and ‘observations /alterations’ page of the passport.

Original birth certificate and one photocopy (certified English translations will not be accepted). [Submission of a birth certificate issued within six months of the application is necessary]

If the applicant is born outside Sri Lanka original citizenship certificate of Sri Lanka and one photocopy. (certified English translations will not be accepted) and need to submit an affidavit affirming the retention of Sri Lanka citizenship . (affidavit format is attached)

Swiss Residence Permit /Visa and one photocopy

National Identity Card (N.I.C) and one photocopy (if you are not in possession of the N.I.C. at the time of application, a letter addressed to the Controller General/Immigration informing the same. (letter format is attached ).

Original marriage certificate and one photocopy (only for female applicants if the surname of the husband should be included in the passport).

Education and Employment certificates (if your profession is needed to be included in the passport). If the certificates are issued in French, English translations should be done by an authorized translator.

One self-addressed envelope with CHF 6.80 stamp.

Photocopies of all the above documents should be in the A4 size.

If the applicant of the passport is a child under 16 years: 

If your child was born in Switzerland, you may apply for a new passport once the child’s birth is registered at the Consulate General in Geneva.

Once a child's birth is registered, citizenship and application for a passport for the child can be done simultaneously.

Any Sri Lankan national under 16 years may wish to obtain a separate passport. New passports for under 16 years old are issued only by Controller / Immigration & Emigration, Colombo and the process usually takes about 12 – 14 weeks from the date of application. 

Documents Required:

Please submit the following documents to the Embassy in order to submit your child’s application for new passport to the Department of Immigration and Emigration/Colombo:

Duly completed Form K 35 application ( Application for Sri Lankan Passport (Form K 35))

(please use English Block Capital). Parents should write the first name of the child inside the cage provided in the application form for the signature of the applicant. Section 21 of the application will be completed by the Consulate General.

- Two passports and 01 photocopy each of the data page of the passports.

- 01 photocopy each of the ‘observations /alterations’ page of the passport if there are any observations/alterations.

- Swiss Residence Permit /Visa and one photocopy of both parents

Original Sri Lankan birth certificate of the child and 02 photocopies (certified English translations will not be accepted). [Submission of a birth certificate issued within six months of the application would expedite the process]

Citizenship certificate of the child (if the certificate is not issued at the time of application for the passport, a copy of the payment receipt issued for the citizenship certificate).

02 photocopies of dual citizenship if the child holds dual citizenship.

A letter addressed to the Controller General/Immigration informing that the parents have no objection for issuance of a separate passport to the child (signatures of both parents should appear as similar to the signature in their passport). A specimen letter sample.

One self-addressed envelope with CHF 6.80 stamp.

Photocopies of all the above documents should be in the A4 size.

No objection letter from a parent in overseas for issuance of a passport to a child 

In case where one parent is in Switzerland and the application to obtain a new passport for a child is submitted Department of Immigration and Emigration in Colombo by the other parent from Sri Lanka, the parent in Switzerland should:

- write a letter addressed to the Controller General/ Immigration and Emigration, Colombo stating he/she has no objection for the issuance of a passport to the child and submit the same to the Consulate General for attestation along with his/her passport and a copy of the birth certificate of the child.

How to Submit the Application

In view of the further relaxation of COVID-19 restrictions by the Swiss authorities, Consular services at the Sri Lanka Consulate in Geneva will continue to be provided in the following manner.

NEW PASSPORTS AND RENEWALS 

Applications for New Passports/Passport Renewals could be submitted by obtaining prior appointment at  https://geneva.embassyonline.lk/  or by sending the duly completed application form via registered post with the originals of the supporting documents.

If you apply via registered post, the following is the process.

• A copy of your Swiss ID (both sides) should be attested by your Cantonal office. This document should also be sent with the applications.

• The original documents will be returned to the applicant in one of the self-addressed envelopes provided by you.

  • Notes:

  • This Consulate General is not responsible for any document lost in the post.

  • Submission of forged documents and making false declarations relating to citizenship is a punishable offence. Fees will not be refunded in these circumstances.

  • Incomplete applications will be returned and consular fees will not be refunded.

  • The Department of Immigration and Emigration/Colombo takes around 12 – 14 weeks to issue a new passport through this Consulate General for duly completed application forms.
