President Mahinda Rajapaksa in
his message for the Human Rights Day stated that as the
head of state he is fully committed to protect human
rights of people not only in Sri Lanka but also members
of the world community.
In his message to mark the
human rights day, which fell yesterday, President
Rajapaksa urged the people of all communities to commit
themselves towards the protection of human rights to
strengthen democracy and also achieve lasting peace in
the country.
He said that the government
is also committed to ensure the protection of the rights
of all communities irrespective of their personal
beliefs and affiliations, as a necessity to protect the
human rights is felt today much more than in the past.
President Rajapaksa stated
in his message that the country belongs to all citizens
irrespective of their communal differences, and the
country would achieve lasting peace only by inculcating
a habit to respect the likes and dislikes of one
another.
He added that a special
commission was appointed recently to probe into human
rights violations if there were any, and within a year,
the aim of this commission will be to punish the
culprits and prevent similar incidents in the future.
President Rajapaksa said
that the Government jointly with the international
community and the Non Governmental Organisations has
made every effort to provide relief to victims
especially in the conflict areas in the north and the
east. He said that the new regulations were proclaimed
furthering the commitment to save the democracy from
terrorism and ensure the people of right to life.
International human rights day is an annual event
observed by the international community to mark the
universal declaration of human rights in 1948 by the
United Nations general assembly. |
