07th February 2008

Following the Emirates decision to cease managent operations of SriLankan Airlines effective from the 31st of March this year, the Government is pursing the possibility of operating all activities under State ownership.

Minister of Ports and Aviation, Chamal Rajapaksa has directed the officials to acquire administrative know-how for operations from overseas for the smooth functioning of the airline’s activities.

The Government has taken this step to ensure that SriLankan remains a profit making business venture.

With the new drift in management the Government will take measures to avert all the shortcomings that existed during ‘Emirates’ management period. It is envisaged that SriLankan will add on new features to the service including extra flights to more tourist arriving destinations.
The salaries of the airline staff will be maintained in the same scales that existed earlier. Taking all these issues into consideration the Minister has requested for an immediate report prior to the nullification of the agreement with ‘Emirates’.
