The Government is planning to hold local government elections in the Jaffna District, Chairman of the Northern Special Task Force, Minister Douglas Devananda told The Island yesterday.

He said polls to the Jaffna local bodies, which had not been held for the past two decades, will take place before elections to the Northern Provincial Council.

Developing the Jaffna district would be more meaningful if the people, who had been deprived of their franchise, were allowed to elect their own representatives making development work more meaningful, Devananda said.
