Sri Lanka moved further up in the latest International Cricket Council (ICC) team rankings following their emphatic 2-1 series victory over its Asian neighbours India concluded at the P. Saravanamuttu Stadium on Monday. Mahela Jayawardena led Sri Lankan team earned five rating points with their recent victories. In addition Sri Lanka are now just one ratings point behind the third placed team India. Sri Lanka have now collected a total of 108 ratings points after starting on 103 while India have slumped to 109 after starting the series on 113.
Sri Lanka of course will not play any more test matches until next year and will be hoping that Australia come on top of India during their series to further consolidate their position in the rankings.
Ricky Ponting's side will travel to India in October for a four Test series and if it wins the series 3-0, Kumble's men will drop behind Jayawardena’s side by one ratings point.
Meanwhile South Africa retained its second place in the test championship table after earning one ratings point for its 2-1 series victory over England who dropped two ratings points and slipped to 104, four behind third-placed Sri Lanka and four ahead of sixth-placed Pakistan.
Despite scoring a matchwinning century in the third and deciding test match Sri Lanka's Kumar Sangakkara still occupies the second place behind West Indian Shivnarine Chanderpaul.
However skipper Mahela Jayawardena consolidated his position and is placed sixth in the latest rankings. (CDN)
