Defence Spokesman, Minister Keheliya Rambukwella praised the position taken by India's Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh on the issue of terrorism during the recently concluded SAARC Summit in Colombo.Dr. Singh expressed the view that "terrorism is the single biggest threat to South Asia" and Minister Rambukwella, speaking at the weekly media briefing on the defence situation today (August 7) pointed out that this is a clear and positive statement towards eradicating terrorism in the region.
Minister Rambukwella said that Dr. Singh's request to take tangible and straight forward measures to curb terrorism is commendable and that as a country that has been fighting the scourge of terrorism for several decades, Sri Lanka has taken the matter very seriously.
"Given that Sri Lanka has been listed at the third and India at the fifth position in Asia to suffer the scourge of terrorism it was a timely necessity to adopt into a common policy to overcome the threat of terrorism at the 15th SAARC summit."
Minister Rambukwella observed this year's SAARC as the first in its history to substantially address the menace of terrorism and to enter into a collective effort to combat it.
