The official website of the Permanent Mission of Sri Lanka, www.lankamission.org , has been ranked the second most popular website of those of Permanent Missions in Geneva, according to an international internet company which tracks web traffic on all websites.
According to the Alexa Web Search Platform, a leading international statistic and web search engine which crawls all publicly available web sites to record and analyze web usage, the website of the Permanent Mission of Sri Lanka to the United Nations and Other International Organizations in Geneva is second only to the web site of the Permanent Mission of Algeria in Geneva. The official web sites of the Permanent Missions of Italy, Myanmar, the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC), Japan, Iran, Afghanistan, Kyrgyzstan and Romania are all ranked after Sri Lanka among the 10 most popular Mission websites in Geneva.
The ranking is based on number of page views and number of users the websites receives.According to this latest ranking by Alexa, the Sri Lanka Mission’s website, which was ranked 4th in the list a week ago, has since reached the second place in a short-listed 60 Geneva Mission websites. Geneva is in fact home to more than 160 Permanent Missions to the United Nations and other International Organizations.
This is a major achievement for the Sri Lankan Mission’s website given that it started functioning actively just over a year ago. Although the website of the Sri Lanka Mission has been online for a number of years, its currently active role in giving Sri Lankan news to the outer world has been developed under its present Ambassador/Permanent Representative H.E. Dr. Dayan Jayatilleka who took office in June 2007. Operating under an extremely limited but efficient IT staff, the Mission web site records users from Switzerland (36.4%), the United Kingdom (17.4%) and Sri Lanka (12.4%). In addition, more than 1/3 (33.9%) of its users are from a host of other countries, including the US, Australia, Canada, India, the Russian Federation, Germany, Italy, Austria, Japan, France, Singapore, etc.
www.lankamission.org is a multifaceted web site that presents Sri Lanka in the international arena and defends its image abroad. Apart from the visa and consular sections, the web site has a daily updated newsroom, features and tourist information sections as well as links to other government official websites and Sri Lankan state radio and TV channels. The website has a subscriber list and strives to tap the non-English speaking French web users interested in Sri Lanka by presenting certain important news items in French.
