Minister Keheliya Rambukwella has pointed out that the entire East is reaping benefits of democracy and development since its liberation from the terrorist a year ago. Expressing views to the media today, the Minister said it is pertinent to look back at the achievements since the liberation of the East.
The Government took a firm decision that it will not hold talks with the LTTE after they blocked the Mavil Aru Anicuit and deprived the innocent civilians of their water.
Thereafter, the troops launched military operations and captured Sampur, Muttur, Vakare and finally Thoppigala. The Government was able to defeat the LTTE militarily. It was a victory of the people. The Government did not stop after the liberation but unveiled a mega development programme allocating 6.2 billion rupees from the Treasury to develop the region under the Eastern Resurgence programme. Minister Rambukwella opined that major development is afoot. Provincial Council elections were also held to enthrone democracy.
Highways, Transport, Fisheries, Agriculture, Irrigation, Health and Education are the sectors that are being developed. In addition to houses, particularity power supplies were undertaken to areas such as Vakare. He added that the foundation has been laid for the people to lead a better life in the East.
