US firms invest in Sri Lanka

The US - Sri Lanka Trade and Investment Conference is being held with the support of Barack Obama’s administration. The US State Department, the US Trade Representative Office, the Sri Lankan Embassy in Washington, the Sri Lanka Commerce Department and the Investment Promotion Ministry are the organizers of the event.

Representatives of 40 leading American investment companies are engaged in deliberations. It is desired to identify investment opportunities in Infrastructure Development, Energy, Tourism, Information Technology, Health, Education and Transport sectors. Sri Lankan companies are also attending the meeting. The meeting opened under the patronage of Minister of Investment Promotion, Media and Information, Anura Priyadharshana Yapa. 

The Minister said the Government was upbeat about the attention directed by the United States on Sri Lanka due to the prevailing conducive situation. Foreign investment is important in rebuilding the nation. Political stability is a strong factor for investment. There are opportunities for investments in any part of the country including the North and East.

Assistant US Trade Representative for South Asia Michael Delaney giving his views said Sri Lanka has become a suitable centre for investment. It is clear that the island was entering a new era after 2009. They are satisfied that the Sri Lankan Government is dedicated to this task. Under such a situation they are glad to invest in the island. It has all required resources.
