Government to resettle IDPs in relief villages by end of 2009

Thursday, 20 August 2009

(Colombo-Lankapuvath-August 20) – Minister of Disaster Management and human Rights Mahinda Samarasinghe said that the main target of the government is to resettle the displaced people in relief villages in their own villages before the end of this year.

He said that the President is keen to achieve this objective soon.

Minister Samarasinghe disclosed that an integrated programme is in place to face flood threats and other emergencies.

He pointed out that the health facilities in the welfare villages are at a satisfactory level.

He further said that 112 centres have been set up as play areas for the children in those villages. Removal of landmines has become a major problem before resettling people in the welfare villages.

They would be resettled in their own villages as soon as the landmines were removed.

He mentioned this during a special debate in parliament yesterday.
