The MFA has dispatched a shipment of humanitarian aid to assist the people of Sri Lanka, left homeless due to the war with the Tamil rebels.

A shipment of medical equipment and drugs, contributed by the MFA and the Joint Distribution Committee (JDC), in cooperation with the Ministry of Health, will be delivered tomorrow (Friday, June 19 2009) to the Sri Lankan health authorities.

The humanitarian shipment, which was collected and organized by MASHAV, the Israel Center for International Cooperation, will be presented by  MFA deputy Director General for Asia and the Pacific, Ruth Kahanoff, who is currently visiting Colombo,  the capital of Sri Lanka.

The MFA has thus responded to the request of the Sri Lankan president, who requested the assistance of the international community. A severe crisis was created in the northeastern region of the country, due to the war against the Tamil rebels, which left three hundred thousand people homeless and forced to live in terrible conditions.
