Colombo—Once the “dust of war and recrimination settles down”, Japan could help raise international funding for reconstruction of Sri Lanka’s war ravaged North and East, visiting Japanese Special Peace Envoy, Yasushi Akashi said.

He, said at some point of time there should be an opportunity to assess the situation in Sri Lanka and persuade the more affluent countries to help, but for that to happen Sri Lanka has to evolve into a “more trusting community.”

Japan, played a pivotal role in 2003,to obtain international pledges totalling US$ 4 billion, as a gift for durable peace in Sri Lanka, but the LTTE unfortunately boycotted the Tokyo Donor Conference, Akashi said. He, said that Japan, the World Bank and the Asian Development Bank have already pledged a total of US$ 1 billion.
