Solar power for rural areas

Thursday, 19 February 2009

The Ministry of Power and Energy has decided to make available solar power to rural areas where it is costly for the board to erect transmission lines.

An official of the Power and Energy Ministry said the project, scheduled to be launched next month, will meet approximately 8% of the electricity demand.

He pointed out that 82% of the project has already been completed.

Around 300 families from the Moneragala district will benefit in the first step of the project.

The Government has taken a policy decision to provide electricity using natural resources including mini-hydro, biogas, compost fertiliser, the official said.
