AG orders release of detainees without charges

Monday, 22 December 2008

The newly appointed Attorney General, Mohan Peiris, today (Dec. 22nd) has reportedly informed the IGP to release suspects detained under the Prevention of Terrorist Act and Emergency Regulations, if there is no adequate evidence to file charges against them.

Sources at the AG's Department say that Mr. Peiris has also said that state counsels and Police Department should intervene in order to expedite investigations into suspects against whom there is enough evidence.

Speaking to the media shortly after assuming office and receiving blessings of the Malwatta and Asgiriya chief prelates, the AG said the implementation of the law should always ease public life.

Cooperation from the people too, is crucial for its efficiency, he added.

Noting the law should always treat the public equally, the AG further said he would work to ensure justice and application of the law.

Further, Mr. Peiris said that he has directed officials to avoid law's delays when handing in indictments, charge sheets and in the provision of legal advice.
