The Ministry of Rural Industries and Self Employment Promotion has taken steps to set up ‘Production Villages’ island-wide, the Minister of Rural Industries and Self Employment Promotion S. B. Navinna said.
Accordingly, the Ministry has set up five cut foliage cultivation villages in Wariyapola, Imiyangoda, Mamunuwa, Walpola, Mahakeliya and Katupotha in the Wariyapola electorate.
The Minister stated that under this project, the district would develop fast and production would bring in foreign exchange to the Kurunegala district. The massive production village scheme will be implemented over three years and it targets both the export and local market.
The Minister said that approximately Rs. 8 million had been invested in this scheme by the Ministry. Around 650,000 palm cane and “Giniseeriya” plants to cover 500 people in these five villages have been distributed already.
