UN top post for Dr. Deepika Udagama

 The Secretary General of the UN has recently appointed Dr. Deepika Udagama, of the Faculty of Law, University of Colombo, as a member of the Board of Trustees of the UN Voluntary Fund for Technical Cooperation in the Field of Human Rights.

The five trustees on the Board of the Voluntary Fund, who act as a think tank guiding the activities of the Fund, have been appointed as independent experts from the various geographic regions.

  

Dr. Udagama represents the Asian region. She has previously served as the UN Co-Special Rapporteur on the theme “Globalisation and its Impact on Human Rights” having been elected by the UN Sub-Commission on Human Rights.

  

Dr. Udagama, who founded the Centre for the Study of Human Rights of the University of Colombo and served as its Director for six years from its inception, is also a former member of the National Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka.  

She serves on the governing bodies of several organisations including the CMI Rights Movement of Sri Lanka and the International Centre for Ethnic Studies.
