LTTE Attempts to Overpower Troops Foiled |

WANNI: TROOPS DESPITE inclement weather in certain parts of WANNI and MANNAR areas on Wednesday (02) continued their offensives bringing disaster to the enemy.
Troops in newly captured SINNAPANDIVIRICHCHAN in VAVUNIYA foiled an LTTE attempt to re-capture one of their bunkers in the area after directing a chain of machine gun, mortar and RPG fire at bout 9.00 p.m.
Alert troops responded using artillery, mortar, RPG, machine gun and small arms fire to the threat and chased them away killing at least ten of them. The enemy transmissions said eleven of their cadres were killed and five more injured as a result of this clash.
Troops however found one female dead body of a terrorist, apparently left behind by fleeing Tigers.
Two valiant soldiers during the fight to defend the bunkers sacrificed their lives for the sake of the country. Fifteen more soldiers with injuries sought treatment from nearby hospitals after the fight.
Meanwhile, troops attacked a gun position of the terrorists in the general area north of KIRIIBBANWEWA in WELIOYA sector Wednesday (2) around 4.15 p.m. and confirmed three terrorists were either killed or wounded in the attack.
In another development, troops in the same above area captured one long terrorist trench dug by the terrorists for some destructive missions and unearth six LTTE Improvised Explosive Devices and 261 LTTE anti personnel mines Wednesday (2) in the afternoon.
Troops later on attacked a similar LTTE trench line in the same general area north of KIRIIBBANWEWA Wednesday (2) around 3.15 p.m. when it was spotted by clearing troops.
Troops saw a few terrorists running in panic but some of them received injuries in the troop fire. Troops on close search found one tent and 220 ammunition rounds from the trench area.
In the north of JANAKAPURA troops thwarted an LTTE attempt to attack one of their positions at about 11.45 a.m. on Wednesday (02). Similarly, troops after heavy resistance captured another terrorist bunker and one of their trenches in the deep jungles north of JANAKAPURA on Wednesday (02) at about 3.00 p.m. During this fight one soldier got injured and was admitted to hospital.
In the same area troops advanced further to expand their Forward Defence Line and Engineer troops simultaneously started unearthing LTTE explosives. Engineer troops removed eight anti personnel mines from the new area.
Troops in the meantime during de-mining work in JANAKAPURA yesterday (02) removed 285 LTTE anti personnel mines. Around 2.00 p.m. on Wednesday (02) troops sprung against a terrorist bunker in NIKAWEWA area and killed four terrorists who were inside it.
