The President opined that they strongly believed that workers should join Trade Unions. It should be the obligation of a trade union to safeguard the work place and to win the rights of workers. But some are attempting to make it a threat. Trade Unions should not be a threat or battle devastating property. This vision and the destruction system should change. They should fight on behalf of their rights. A strike is not a threat but should be a sharpened sword. The President pointed out that some groups betray their motherland. He recalled that they were also in the opposition but was vociferous against misdoings. They did not betray the country. He queried as to against whom they were taking revenge. It is with the workers. If anyone thinks of dragging the workers on to the streets, the government is not prepared to tolerate them. He emphasised that appropriate action will be taken. The President was speaking at a ceremony at Temple Trees this morning. It was arranged to present letters of appointment to 1000 Banking Assistants of the People’s Bank. They were selected through a competitive examination which covered all Districts. The President further said he will not hesitate to take stern action against VIP security personnel who flout the law. Certain political leaders participate in demonstrations with their security personnel. It is revealed that on such occasions, the VIP security contributes to making the demonstrations violent. The President emphasised that he will be vigilant on such VIP security personnel. The President, Minister Ranjith Siyambalapitiya and People’s Bank Chairman W. Karunajeewa handed over the letters of appointment. Many senior officials of the Bank were present. Minister Ranjith Siyambalapitiya and the People’s Bank Chairman also addressed the ceremony.
