 The Provincial Council election date for the North Central and the Sabaragamuwa provincial councils is fixed for on August 23.All major parties and a number of independent groups conclude handing over of nominations for the North Central and the Sabaragamuwa provincial council elections this morning.The United People’s Freedom Alliance has handed over the nominations for all four districts of both the provinces for the forthcoming North provincial Council elections.

United National Party as well Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna had also handed over nominations for both the provinces. Rauff Hakeem led Sri Lanka Muslim Congress will jointly contest with the UNP this time too.

Meanwhile, Arumugan Thondaman led Ceylon Workers Congress has also handed over their nominations only for the Sabaragamuwa province.

Newly formed Jathika Nidahas Peramuna (JNP) had announced that they would not contest the elections as their party was not yet accepted by the Department of Elections.

The sources from the Department of elections said that an application to register a party named Patriotic Freedom Front forwarded by JVP dissident Piyasiri Wijenayake was given the official recognition on June 03.
