Sri Lanka: Majority of disappearance complaints are false - Commission PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 25 June 2008

Inquiries have revealed that a majority of complaints made to the Police on abductions and disappearances are not genuine. Chairman of the Presidential Commission of Inquiry into Abductions, Disappearances and Unrevealed Carnage Mahanama Tilakaratne claimed these had been committed for personal reasons.

Addressing the media in Colombo today, Mr. Tilakaratne said every complaint referred to a white coloured van. There is a large number of white vans in Sri Lanka. Apart from the CID and the Terrorist Investigation Division, other outfits too have carried out abductions in white coloured vans. Some had gone abroad without informing their relatives.

Relatives of two persons Gowri Garan Singh and Aranavu had reported about their disappearance.

Inquiries have revealed that they had gone abroad on a UL-127 aircraft at 1615 hours on the day they were reported missing. Mr. Tilakeratne described it as a serious situation. He bared that complaints had been received on disappearance of persons based on love affairs, robbery, personal revenge and avoiding appearance in Courts as well as extortion of money.

Even though the real situation had come to light, the complainants had remained silent. He announced that the Commission will take initiatives to hand over the report to the President.
