Sri Lankans in China, New Zealand and Australia pay tribute to 'War Heroes' |

Sri Lankans living in China, New Zealand and Australia gathered to pay their respect to the fallen war heroes of their motherland who made the supreme sacrifice to liberate their fellow citizens from the clutches of terrorism.
The Sri Lankan community living in China paid tribute to the fallen war heroes at the Sri Lanka Embassy in Bejing June 7, 2008 (Ranaviru Commemoration Day) with the participation of senior Military Officers following the National Defence Course at the National Defence University and the Air Defence Command College in Beijing. Addressing the gathering, Sri Lanka Ambassador to China Karunatilaka Amunugama said that the Government has initiated many activities to boost the morale of our security forces and also launched a planned development programme and sustainable livelihood program for the benefit of the people in the liberated areas. He also pointed out that though this event was arranged far away from home to show our solidarity for the armed forces,it helped to understand the responsibility that lies in the hands of all Sri Lankans to look after the well being of the families of fallen heroes. Highlighting the Government's ''Api Wenuwen Api'' or ''Be together for all" housing program to build 50,000 housing unites for armed force personnel, he called upon the Sri Lankan community in Beijing to come forward and help build at least 10 houses before the end of 2008. He added that the Sri Lanka Missions and Honorary Consulates abroad collected funds to the tune of Rs. 78 million for the Neganehira Navodaya Eastern Resurgence Programme. Meanwhile the "Ranaviru Commemoration Ceremony" in New Zealand was also held on the same day in Auckland. This event was organised by the New Zealand Society for Peace, Unity and Human Rights in Sri Lanka (SPUR New Zealand). The Chief Sangha Nayake of New Zealand Ven. Walgama Munindawansa Thero, Rev. Father Dharshana Jayamanne and Mr. M.C.A. Hassan addressed the large gathering. All three religious leaders appreciated the efforts made by the personnel in the security forces in Sri Lanka to maintain the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Sri Lanka. They paid respect to those who sacrificed their lives. Meanwhile, Sri Lankan expatriates residing in Melbourne and the Society for Peace, Unity and Human Rights in Sri Lanka (SPUR), Australia also held poojas to bless and commemorate the war heroes.
