The United People's Freedom Alliance (UPFA) won the first ever Eastern Provincial Council election, securing 20 seats to the UNP's 15. The People's Liberation Front (JVP) got one seat from Trincomalee while the TDNA won one seat from Batticaloa.
The UPFA held sway in Batticaloa and Ampara while the UNP scored a narrow win in Trincomalee. The election saw a healthy 65.78% voter turnout, underscoring the enthusiasm of the people in the province for democracy, especially after the area of rid of terrorism by the security forces recently.
