A bomb exploded in 'City Café and Bake House' on D.S. Senanayake St., Ampara around 5.40 pm today (May 9). Eleven persons are reported to have died and several others injured. Only those who were within the premises have fallen victim to this terrorist attack and no one in the vicinity were reported to have suffered any injuries.
The explosion had taken place a mere 100m from the Campaign Office of the United People's Freedom Alliance. Contrary to reports in certain sections of the media, Mrs. Ferial Ashroff has not been harmed in this attack. Mrs. Ashroff had been campaigning on behalf of the UPFA in Kalmunai at the time and there is no truth in speculation that the Minister had been the target of the attack.
