The forcibly evicted Muslims in 1990 from Musali, Mannar will be resettled in the final phase of the resettlement project commencing today, Ministry of Resettlement and Disaster Relief Services informed. 409 persons from 122 families are being resettled today in the first phase, Ministry sources added.

The Musali DS division, the only majority DS division in the Northern Province, has 20 Grama Sevaka divisions out of which 11 divisions were cleared from landmines, pressure mines etc. and the infrastructure has been restored in this area. The Muslim areas of the Musali DS division are still to be cleared of the mines and infrastructure to be installed. Since this would take time the resettlement of the forcibly evicted Muslims is delayed, the sources revealed.

Nearly 75,000 Muslims were ethnically cleansed from the Northern Province in 1990 by the LTTE and most of them are still languishing in welfare camps as refugees in the North Western province mainly Puttalam.
