COLOMBO: LTTE-SLAIN Sri Lanka’s former President Mr. Ranasinghe Premadasa’s fifteenth death anniversary falls today (May 1st). The main commemorative ceremony, followed by a series of meritorious activities island-wide, takes place at his memorial near Aluthkade, Colombo 15, this morning attended by Mrs. Hema Premadasa, his children, close relatives and a large number of Sri Lankans of all ethnicities.
An LTTE suicide bomber blew himself up on Colombo Armour Street, by the side of the former President Premadasa on that fateful day when he was busy attending to the last minute organizational work of the government’s May Day procession. The powerful blast killed the second Executive President of Sri Lanka and twenty more innocent May Day activists including Police officers on the spot on 1st May 1993. Thirty one civilians and Police officers were badly injured and admitted to hospitals. The untimely death of this statesman, whose hands-on approach to practical requirements of the common masses was schematically orchestrated by Tiger terrorists whose collaborators befriended the President at his private residence in Keselwatta, Gunasinghapura.
Tiger aides after infiltrating his residence by way of hair-dressers committed this heinous crime after developing close mutual contacts with the people-friendly former President. (Courtesy : Sri Lanka Army ) |
