Blossoming children of Menik Farm Relief Village - Settikulam PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 30 March 2009

The first five years of a child's life is critical for brain development. It is critical not only because of the rapidity of brain development during this period, but also because it is a period when brain development is most susceptible to external influences that determines the intellectual functioning.

In order to provide a child friendly environment for the children at Menik farm, the Children's Secretariat of the Ministry of Child Development and Women's Empowerment has launched many projects at this relief village in Settikulam. One of the key projects undertaken by the Children's Secretariat is the development of a child friendly preschool and play area. This project has been established in partnership with Hemas Holdings PLC.

The child friendly preschool and play area is equipped with all facilities provided by Hemas and the building has been constructed by the Ministry of Rehabilitation. The teachers are employed by JSR and they also provide the school uniforms and other necessities. Eighteen females living in the relief village were selected for a three day initial teacher training program, conducted by the Children's Secretariat.

These teachers are now employed in this preschool under the supervision of an officer appointed by the Ministry. Regular inspections are made by the officers at Children's Secretariat, in order to maintain standards.

The play area sponsored by Hemas was officially opened in early March by the Director Children's Secretariat and Senior Management of Hemas Holdings PLC. Many children use this facility in the village and it is very popular amongst the children at Menik Farm.
