MULLAITTIVU: A PRE-DAWN escape of nine displaced civilians from the ‘Safe Zone’ area  across Mullaitivu lagoon met with mishap early Tuesday (3) morning, but the quick action of the Army troops rescued their lives and brought them ashore.

The episode has unfolded late Monday (2) night when terrorists have waded into the ‘Safe Zone’ and begun abducting minors from the area, despite protests made by displaced civilians living there.

Nine men and women including two young boys in the ‘Safe Zone’ jumped on a locally-made craft, “Teppam” and started drifting for safety. As the escapees were moving, Tiger terrorists, hiding in the ‘Safe Zone’ went on firing unsuccessfully towards those escapees.

However, amidst gunfire, they managed to sail towards Vellamullivaikkal but their craft unfortunately capsized and all of them fell into Mullaitivu seas.

However, troops swiftly jumped into action and rescued all nine civilians including two boys and three women.
