Catholic priest killed in Claymore blast in LTTE-held territory PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 21 April 2008

Rev Fr Karunaratnam, a Catholic priest and Chairperson of the North East Secretariat on Human Rights (NESOHR), was killed by a claymore attack, on the Mallavi – Vavunikkulam Road last afternoon (20).

Brig. Udaya Nanayakkara, Army Spokesman, has said that the incident having occured deep in LTTE-held territory cannot be commented on.

Political analysts meanwhile observe that the LTTE is not averse to assassinating those who are close to them or even sympathisers in order to pin the blame on the security forces and win international sympathy for their murderous cause.

They point out that countless Tamils, including intellectuals and other key figures in civil society have been frequently attacked and killed by the LTTE and that most such killings have occured after the then Government and the LTTE signed a ceasefire agreement in February 2002.
