 Czech tourist arrivals to Sri Lanka are expected to double next year.

In an interview with Lankapuvath, the team leader of a visiting Czech delegation, Hana Sklenerova said that Czech arrivals recorded around 5,000 last year. A team of professionals in the field of Tourism in the Czech Republic arrived in Sri Lanka Yesterday to promote Sri Lankan tourism there.

 There was much ado about the UN Human Rights Council election at the time of going to press. Sri Lanka was trying her best to retain her seat. Her desperate struggle to avoid defeat was due to prestige and domestic political compulsions of the ruling party rather than anything else. Her defeat or victory will hardly signify anything, unless it is viewed through political glasses.

Ancient Mariners shooting the albatross

Over the last couple of weeks there has been high drama with regard to Sri Lanka and the Human Rights Council of the United Nations. May 13th saw the Universal Periodic Review of Sri Lanka, with nearly 70 countries putting themselves down to speak, only 56 ultimately having time to do so. The rest of the week saw discussions over the Report of the Review, which was ultimately adopted on the 19th, rather than the 15th as originally scheduled.

The problem of child soldiers has been a recurrent nightmare for Sri Lanka, since the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam made almost a fetish of using children in their forces. Their baby brigade was a source of pride during the nineties and, even though they tried in the course of that decade to establish themselves as a respectable military organization, the issue of child soldiers reveals most clearly perhaps their rejection of civilized norms.

 H.E. Dr. Dayan Jayatilleka, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Sri Lanka to the United Nations in Geneva served on the jury committee of the Time for Peace Film & Music Awards 2007/2008 which was held in London on 12th May 2008.
