We are at the last, most decisive and perhaps the toughest, most grueling stage of this war.
Sri Lanka has been fighting a war of self defense, to prevent the carving up of its small territory by a secessionist militia. It has been fighting against an enemy that has deployed all forms of terrorism ranging from suicide bombings of civilian targets to the assassination of unarmed democratic politicians. |

Colombo: The United States has expressed hope that the fall of LTTEs de-facto capital of Kilinochchi would end decades of ethnic conflict in Sri Lanka and said there was no need to hold talks with the Tiger rebels.
"The war which has gripped the island nation for more than 25 years is drawing to an end," the US Embassy said in a statement in Colombo. |

By Jay Shankar Bloomberg -- Sri Lanka will pursue its plan for devolving power in regions previously controlled by Tamil rebels after renewing a ban on the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, effectively ruling out new peace talks with the group. President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s Cabinet will “take a decision on what the political solution to end the conflict will be” once an all-party committee presents draft proposals for power-sharing, Anura Priyadarshana Yapa, the minister for media and information, said in an interview in the capital, Colombo. |

By C. Bryson Hull and Ranga Sirilal COLOMBO (Reuters) - Sri Lanka hit the Tamil Tigers on Wednesday with a terrorist designation it lifted as part of ill-fated 2002 truce, as soldiers pressured the separatists' last stronghold on the Jaffna Peninsula.
Though largely symbolic, since the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) are already on U.S., E.U. and Indian terrorist lists and the government routinely calls them that, the cabinet vote is just one more sign Sri Lanka has no plans to negotiate. |
