 The sixth U.S.-Sri Lanka Trade and Investment Framework Agreement (TIFA) Council meeting was held in Washington on May 29. The U.S. delegation was led by Deputy United States Trade Representative John K. Veroneau. Gamini Lakshman (G.L.) Peiris, Minister for Export Development and International Trade, led the Sri Lankan delegation.

Sri Lanka rebels reject devolution plan PDF Print E-mail

Sri Lanka's Tamil Tiger rebels condemned government moves to devolve more power to the north and east as they reported killing 31 troops in fresh fighting, according to a pro-rebel website on Saturday.

The head of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam's (LTTE) political wing, B Nadesan, said the plan under which the government recently held local elections in former rebel-held areas contained "no basis for a settlement".

 The May 10 elections to the Eastern Provincial Council give the ruling combine a favourable result.

THE much-awaited elections to Sri Lanka’s Eastern Provincial Council (EPC) passed off without any major incidents of violence on May 10. There were, of course, Opposition charges of large-scale electoral malpractices but, contrary to apprehensions, there was no bloodshed. Barring a blast in a restaurant in Ampara town on the eve of polling day, which killed 12 people and injured 25, the six weeks in the run-up to the elections were remarkably free of any major violence. This in itself is no mean achievement, given the fact that just under a year ago the province was the theatre of pitched battles between the security forces and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE).

A Sri Lankan firm says it has the world's first carbon-neutral clothes factory

AT A SPANKING new lingerie factory in Thulhiriya, a short drive from Colombo, Sri Lanka's capital, senior managers wear T-shirts. This is not because MAS Holdings, the country's biggest apparel company, which recently opened the factory, is a dress-down sort of a firm. It is because the factory has no air-conditioning. Instead it uses evaporative cooling, which leaves the workplace around four degrees hotter than air-conditioning would—but uses much less energy.

SINGAPORE: Sri Lanka's Tamil Tiger rebels are becoming more violent as they suffer setbacks because of a new government offensive, a top official from the war-torn South Asian nation said Saturday.Foreign Secretary Palitha Kohona said the Tigers have shown no interest in negotiating for permanent peace to end 25 years of separatist violence on the island nation off southern India.
