The Government of Sri Lanka notes with deep concern the continuing violence in the Gaza Strip. The escalation of the military action has resulted in further loss of civilian lives and the deterioration of the humanitarian situation, as well as increased tension in the region.

State Visit of H.E.Mohamed Nasheed,President of the Republic of the Maldives to Sri Lanka

President Mohamed Nasheed of the Republic of Maldives accompanied by First Lady Madam Laila Ali and a high level delegation including 11 Ministers and State Ministers arrived in Sri Lanka on a State visit from 2nd to 4th January 2009 at the invitation of the President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

The Maldivian President and Madam Laila Ali were received by President Mahinda Rajapaksa and First Lady Madam Shiranthi Rajapaksa on arrival yesterday(2nd January) at the Bandaranaike International Airport.

Foreign Minister meets visiting Maldivian President

Foreign Minister Rohitha Bogollagama called on the President of the Republic of Maldives, His Excellency Mohamed Nasheed in Colombo today(2nd January 2009).The Maldivian President arrived in Sri Lanka earlier today,accompanied by a high level delegation on a 3 day State visit.

Importance of implementing Sri Lanka’s agenda abroad highlighted
It is the primary duty of the Foreign Ministry and Sri Lankan Missions abroad to vigorously implement Sri Lanka’s agenda in every aspect while discharging their duties and functions. Foremost among these responsibilities is the protection of the nation’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, which has been highlighted by Sri Lanka at every high level forum in the international arena. These observations were made by Foreign Minister Rohitha Bogollagama, when he addressed the staff of the Ministry today (01 January 2009) at the Foreign Ministry.
