Kohona , Secretary to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs delivered a public lecture at Postgraduate Institute of Management (PIM) , Sri Lanka's leading business school under the theme "The Role of International Agreements and Diplomacy in Promoting Sri Lankan Business" on Tuesday (June 24). The Foreign Secretary highlighted Sri Lanka's economic progress even under terrorist threats and the how the country's economy is challenged by anti Sri Lankan propaganda carried out by LTTE and others.

Sri Lanka: Implementation of a rural solar energy electrification project

 Cabinet granted approval to a memorandum submitted by the Minister of Power and Energy, W.D.J. Seneviratne to select Galgamuwa Village in the Madulla Division, Monaragala District for the implementation of a rural electrification solar project implemented by the Government of Sri Lanka and to authorize and direct the Chairman of the Sustainable Energy Authority (SEA) and other relevant officials to provide a suitable land parcel free of cost and free from encumbrances immediately for the implementation of this project.

Cabinet has granted approval to a memorandum submitted by President Mahinda Rajapaksa in his capacity as the Minister of Finance and Planning to enter into a financing agreement with the International Development Association (IDA) of the World Bank to borrow Special Drawing Rights (SDR) 13.8 million as per the terms for the implementation of the Public Sector Capacity Building Project.

 The call by the Foreign minister Rohitha Bogollagama on President Hamid Karzai of Afghanistan in Kabul on 24th June, had as its outcome a clear meeting of minds on the need for SAARC to resolutely address the contemporary challenges facing the South Asian region. Towards this end the energy crisis, the rising food prices and the suppression of terrorism were identified as requiring a special focus during the forthcoming SAARC Summit in Colombo.

The terrorist outfit maintains its military activities mainly over two districts of the Northern Province namely Kilinochchi and Mulaithiuvu.

Sri Lankan Airlines adds flights to Middle East

 June 25, 2008 (LBO) – Sri Lankan Airlines, the island's national carrier, said it has increased flights to the Middle East to support government moves to attract more tourists from the region.

The state-owned airline said in a statement that weekly flights to the city of Doha had been increased to six from four previously, to Bahrain to seven flights from five earlier, and flights to Dammam to three, up from the present two.

Sri Lanka: 150 LTTE cadres including child soldiers killed in one month - LTTE posters reveal

 Three obituary posters found by troops operating in the Mannar battlefront have revealed the details of 150 LTTE cadres including at over 20 child soldiers killed in one month. According to the defence sources, the posters were found on a billboard in a recently captured office of an LTTE regional leader in the Karakakulam area.

Sri Lanka: Army opens a new front west of A9

 The army had opened a new front on west of Jaffna-Kandy road to flank 57 Division.

Military spokesman Brigadier Uadaya Nanayakkara said the newly created Task Force 11 would advance northwards while the 57 Division stepped up pressure on the LTTE holding on to Periyamadu, about 16 kilometers north of Madhu.

Chairman of the Presidential Commission of Inquiry into Abductions, Disappearances and Unrevealed Carnage Mahanama Tilakaratne claimed these had been committed for personal reasons.

Britain was given the opportunity to grasp an important point the other day. The United Nations Human Rights Council took advantage of a regular review of the situation there to urge the British government to call a referendum on the formulation of a written constitution and preferably a republican one that would confer sovereignty on the people instead of vesting it in the British monarchy.
